Dr Fanning welcomes referrals from GPs and other medical practitioners across South-East Queensland. He accepts referrals for the full range of respiratory and sleep medicine conditions, and aims to provide timely, detailed specialist reports to support ongoing primary care.


How to Refer

Standard GP referral letters are accepted. For electronic referrals, Medical Objects is preferred. Electronic templates are available for Best Practice and Medical Director - search under “Respirologist”.

Dr Fanning accepts referrals for (but not limited to) the following conditions:

Sleep Medicine

  • Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) โ€” new diagnosis, CPAP review, treatment-resistant OSA
  • Suspected narcolepsy or other hypersomnolence syndromes
  • Obesity hypoventilation syndrome
  • Overlap syndrome (OSA + COPD)
  • Other sleep-disordered breathing
  • Unexplained sleepiness/tiredness workup

Respiratory Medicine

  • Undifferentiated breathlessness
  • Persistent or chronic cough
  • Asthma โ€” difficult-to-control, refractory, step-up management
  • Interstitial lung disease (ILD) โ€” including IPF, HP, CTD-ILD
  • Occupational and environmental lung disease
  • Lung cancer โ€” diagnostic workup, multidisciplinary care
  • Pleural disease โ€” effusion, empyema, mesothelioma
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) โ€” new diagnosis, frequent exacerbator, advanced
  • Tuberculosis and non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infection
  • Respiratory infections โ€” complex or recurrent pneumonia, bronchiectasis
  • Pre-operative respiratory assessment

Medico-Legal

  • Independent medical examination (IME)
  • Permanent impairment assessment (AMA 5th Edition, CertPI)
  • Expert witness reporting โ€” occupational lung disease, other respiratory or sleep conditions

What to Include in Your Referral

To ensure the best outcome for your patient, please include:

  • Presenting complaint and relevant history
  • Current medications
  • Attach relevant investigations โ€” spirometry, chest X-ray, CT chest, sleep study if applicable
  • Relevant occupational history (especially for suspected occupational lung disease)
  • Your clinical question or specific area of concern

Investigations & Sleep Laboratory

Dr Fanning is Medical Director of the Respirologist private respiratory and sleep laboratory service, operating at Mater Private Hospital, South Brisbane.

The service offers in-laboratory polysomnography (PSG), home sleep studies, full lung function testing, cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET), bronchoscopy and inpatient care.

Please note that the Westside Private Hospital and John Flynn Private Hospital locations are no longer operating.


After the Consultation

Dr Fanning provides comprehensive specialist reports following each consultation. Reports are sent to the referring doctor, the patient’s usual GP and, where applicable, any other nominated practitioners. He is available for clinical queries by phone on 07 3123 5350 (the rooms will usually provide my mobile number to medical practitioners) during business hours.
